Melted Spoon Flower - Guest Blogger - Hating Martha

I'd like to introduce an awesome craft blog, Hating Martha....Imperfection At Its Best!!!! Love the title of this blog! Today Hating Martha shows us how to make a darling flower out of plastic spoons! I love this idea.

My son finished his school lessons early one day and was looking for something to do. I wanted to do something "educational" and remembered this project I had seen on Pinterest...

It's hard to see the picture, I know. And the link is in another language. It's not my fault...really!

But, the general idea is to melt spoons and make a flower.

8 year old...fire...spoons...what's not to love!

Well, this little science experiment turned out awesome!

You need a bunch of plastic spoons. I didn't count how many we used...hang on I will count...

I think I see 12. And then you need to clip the handles off of them. I recommend a heavy duty snipper.

Hold your spoon over the flame of a candle (I used a blue one...:), just in case you cared).

I found that passing it thru the flame and back and forth works best. Stop after it passes thru very briefly to see if it is curling. Its kind of a trial and error sort of thing. Good thing plastic spoons are a dime a dozen.

The object is to get the spoon to curl into itself. You want various levels of "curl".

Ignore the forks, I thought I had a brilliant idea but it didn't work.

Anyways you can see the mess of curled spoons. Don't worry, it looks good in the end.

The cool part is the flame turns the plastic black. You do need to wipe some soot off, and it gets messy.
But, that takes like...5 minutes...you'll survive.

This next part gets a little hairy. But, my kids sure thought it was cool!

Take your cooled, curled spoons and stick the handles into the flames until the ends are on fire.

Yep, on fire. Your kids will want to do it themselves. Say no!!

Squish the ends on top of each other. Put out the fire if it didn't get put out when you squished it.
Let them cool a bit before doing the next one.

Keep going and going around and around until you get something like this...

And then you want to take a few of the handles, hold them with a pliers or something.

Hold them into the flame so they curl. Do not start them on fire please.

You want one curled tight, one curled less tightly to go around the first one, and the next one to go around the last. You get the idea.

You are making the center.

See...now it looks like a flower.

I found a plain white vase...

some superglue...

and jazzed up that vase!

I like science experiments! Ones this quick and easy are my favorites!
And never fear...my 8 year old got bored quick because he wasn't allowed to play with fire.
Sad day! I am one of those mean mommies. Yup, I think I even have a certificate around here someplace!

Here is a quick and easy Valentines Day Gift idea! Get a box of Altoids and decorate it for the holiday! You could use your paper stash, a digital design, fabric, or a mixture of all three! I decided to design a printable cover for the top of my Altoids box.

First I picked up some Altoids at the store and measured the top of the box. I made my design 3.75" by 2". I printed the design out on cardstock, cut and glued it on! Now I am going to tuck the Valentines Altoids in my husbands backpack as a special surprise!

Some Extra Ideas:

Take out the Altoids and fill it with a favorite candy
Buy the Mini Altoids Box for a teeny tiny surprise
Use bakers twine around the outside for a cute finishing touch
Round the corners

Tax Return Time!!! Wahoo!!!!

If you are like me, you look forward to get your tax return filed and back because that means you get money for projects!  We have lots of great uses and activities planned for when our taxes get returned to us in a little while (like finishing our kitchen, putting in some more insulation and getting some new flooring).   AND gratefully because we have a home-based business, we will be getting a bigger tax return than usual this year!

I suggest the last option as one of the things you do with your tax return.   For those of you where money is tight, those looking for a job (or a second job), those wanting to improve their financial situation or those looking for some fun and socialization, I would love to let you know about my success with my home-based business that I started this past year.  As you may know, in August I joined Paparazzi Accessories as an Independent Consultant.   It is a NEW direct sales company where all the jewelry and accessories are only $5. I felt like it was my lucky in break in life.

I have to tell you that this business has been better than I expected! It has blown my mind. I now KNOW that this IS my lucky break in life and what a relief it is to have found it. Our financial situation is changing and it feels good to not be so stressed about money. In both November and December, I made more than my husband who works full-time at a university. In November, I made more than I have made off my blog for the past 2 years!!!!!! I am still in shock!!! The best part is that it is real - not a dream!

Paparazzi has thrived in this economy because women still love to feel beautiful and look nice even when money is tight. Women still love to give gifts. Women still love to shop! They can still do those when they can find jewelry and accessories for only $5. It is one of the best and least expensive forms of retail therapy available! I don't feel guilty for giving women a great deal! They don't feel regretful for spending $5 or $10 (or more) on themselves and others. It is a win-win situation.

I am so grateful to have found this company this early. If you know about these businesses, the sooner you get in and work, the better. With around 2000 consultants in the USA, Paparazzi is still new, and "undiscovered." It is growing quickly. If you compare it to Scentsy which has over 150,000 consultants, Mary Kay (which has a ton of consultants and a 68% yearly turnover rate), and some of the other direct sales companies, Paparazzi is the way to go. Not that those other companies are bad, it is just that Paparazzi's potential for success is so much better and realistic.

Some other great things about Paparazzi is that you can sell it in retail stores like salons, gift shops, clothing stores, boutiques, etc. If you approach a business owner about Paparazzi and they join, you get commission off of them. I have at least 4 businesses that have joined as wholesale distributors and they are selling this jewelry like crazy!!!! One of them is an art/framing store. She says it brings many ladies into her shop that wouldn't normally come in!

I have taken this jewelry into doctor offices breakrooms, school workrooms, women's shelters, banks and professional offices and the working women (and men) buy it up very quickly. They want and need to look professional and this is the right price for them. I can make $50+ in 30 minutes at an office building.

Paparazzi sells very well at fairs, festivals, boutiques, home parties, business parties and on the side of the road! It's only $5 and it is CUTE!!!

If you need/want to earn money for a fundraiser, this is an awesome product to sell. I am looking forward to helping a few different causes with their fundraisers. They are excited because they know it sells and profit margin is better than with most other things they have tried.

The Paparazzi retail price is the lowest it can be found. (Much less expensive than Claire's Boutique and Charming Charlies and the same quality).
It is a product that women love and want and already buy.

If you are currently in a different direct sales company, I invite you to add this to what you are already doing. You already have a clientele, customers, and friends who trust, respect and buy from you. There are quite a few ladies on my team who have either added Paparazzi Jewelry to their parties or have switched over to Paparazzi completely because it is more profitable and easier to sell. I have ladies who do or have sold Scentsy, designer jeans, Avon, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Thirty-One Gifts, Stampin' Up, Slumber Parties, bags and purses. Those who have ADDED Paparazzi to their parties tell me it has increased their sales in both products (because more women are coming to parties to see/buy $5 jewelry) and they get more bookings because they have added the affordable jewelry. They make more with Paparazzi present!

If you are looking to make thousands a month, you really can do it with this business and some work. If you only want to make a few hundred dollars a month, that is totally doable and quite simple. Just host 2 or 3 parties a month (and parties are NOT hard to book because....it is $5 jewelry.)

There are so many reasons that Paparazzi makes sense. It is a No Brainer! Dave Ramsey, the financial guru, has said "The worst thing you can do in this economy is to get a second job. Toilet Target

Cleaning the toilet (and surrounding area) was much less work before my 3-yr old son learned he could stand to go pee! Now...it is much more involved! Anybody experience this too? I understand why some women want a urinal in their house!

I love what House Of Noise has done to her toilet. She put a vinyl target in the toilet. Genius! Idea of the YEAR!!!! Not only would it hopefully help my son aim better, I know all my guests would get a great laugh! Anyone else in on this idea?

The End of A Great Year!

Today marks the end of 2011. It has been such a fabulous year for me. There are so many AWESOME things that happened to our family. The birth of our new son.

The starting of an INCREDIBLE business for me. New ages, stages, skills and events for my older kids.

I'm so grateful for experience - for the opportunity to try new things and to learn, improve and change.

I don't write a ton of personal things on this blog, but I am grateful for readers and people who comment. I am grateful for you.

Thanks for being part of my life - a big part. I feel like this blog is one of my babies.

I'm looking forward to 2012! There are so many exciting things happening with my family, this blog and professionally, for me. SO many things are coming together. I love it when that happens. I'm super ecstatic about making new goals because I have some BIG ideas and BIG plans for next year.

Not What I Expected For Christmas!!!!

Yesterday, I left my house to run some errands. This is what the corner of the kitchen in my old house looked like.

While I was gone, my husband let my kids take hammers to the wall after he tore the sheetrock off as my 3-yr-old son said, "Let's get this party started." They love to destruct our house!!!! The lathe and plaster had to go to add some new electrical outlets and insulation. There was only one outlet in the kitchen I could use. Not good!

Adding insulation! Hopefully, our kitchen will be a little warmer and keep some heat longer.

My son with his smeared dragon eyes from a party the night before, his safety goggles and the snow shovel turned plaster shovel.

So what exactly is my husband doing? He is mounting a microwave over the stove, adding electrical outlets and insulation and installing at least two new cabinets. More storage and more countertop space (since the microwave will be higher!!!!!!!!) I'm so excited. I'm going to have to paint the kitchen walls and maybe the cabinets a new color. Any ideas or suggestions?

This is what the other side of the kitchen looks like now! I don't think I will be cooking much for the next few days! We will be surviving on goodies and treats brought by neighbors. I'm hoping to find somewhere to go for a delicious Christmas dinner.

Ruffle T-Shirt Cuff - Guest Blogger - Sweet Lemonayde (An 8th Grader!!!)

Every onece in a while, I come across a blog I'm astounded by for one reason or another. I'm totally impressed by the following blogger because she is...... in 8th grade!!!! That's right! Totally talented! Totally young! AND Totally going to be a craft rockstar when she is my age! I asked her to guest post so I could help her rise to stardom:) Welcome, Naomi!!!

Hey readers of Someday Crafts! I am so honored to be here. I'm Naomi (or Nay) from Sweet Lemonayde. I'm a teen who loves to sew, knit, read, write, play soccer and basketball--the list goes on.
Today I'm going to show you a tutorial on how to make a ruffled t-shirt cuff.

Materials: 2 different jersey knit fabrics (I used old t-shirt scraps. You can use whatever fabric you want, but jersey-t-shirt like fabric doesn't fray), needle and thread, scissors, measuring tape, pins, ribbon (optional)
Measure around your wrist and multiply by 2. Cut out a strip of fabric for your ruffle that length by 2."

Use a running stitch and baste at the top of your strip. When you're done, tie a knot a couple inches from the end and cut the thread. Sew another line of stitches going in the same direction on the bottom, opposite the top. Tie off the end and cut.

Grab the two tails, and pull so it ruffles. Pull it till it bunches up to the size of your wrist, minus 1." Take the thread tails and tie knots as close as you can to the gathers so they don't un-ruffle.

Cut 2 strips of contrasting fabric, 2" by however long your ruffled piece is. (you can make the binding a bit longer, and at the end you can just trim the extra off) Now fold it in half. Fold it in half again, enclosing the top of the ruffle, hiding your basting. Use a running stitch to sew it over. Now repeat on the bottom.

For the ties, cut 2 strips from your t-shirt and pull them until they curl. Tie a knot at one end of your strip, and sew to the end of your bracelet, tacking it in place. Repeat on the other end.

Note: for added neatness use pins (*ahem*) and a sewing machine. Also, before you sew on the ties, you can hem the short ends. But I didn't because, as I said before, knit doesn't fray, and as I didn't say before, I'm lazy.
